Treasure Chest Thursday - Memoirs of Roger Williams

I recently found a copy of a book in my Dad's bookcase that was apparently owned by my third great grandfather, Amos Haskell (1787-1859). The book is titled Memoirs of Roger Williams, The Founder Of The State Of Rhode-Island by James D. Knowles, published by Lincoln, Edmands and Co., Boston in 1834. My grandfather's name is written inside the front cover and there is also a small slip of paper with his name on it. I believe this is probably the oldest book on my Dad's bookshelf. The book is in remarkably good condition and was likely passed down from Amos to his son Alfred, then to Frank Owen, then to Merrill and finally to my Dad.

This brings up an interesting question as to whether Amos was literate. According to the book The New Century Book of Facts: A Handbook of Ready Reference, published in 1909, New Gloucester, Maine, where Amos was born had a school in 1764. So it is likely that he was literate. Were your ancestors who lived in the 18th and early 19th centuries literate? I am going to do some more digging into this question.

Sarah Jane (Haskell) Woodman is the daughter of Amos and Sarah (Johnson) Haskell, b. 12 Nov 1821 in New Gloucester, Cumberland County, Maine. She married Alfred Woodman 13 Dec 1846.

Alfred Haskell was b. 20 Feb 1817 to Amos and Sarah (Johnson) Haskell in New Gloucester, Cumberland County, Maine. He d. 13 Sep 1906 in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. In 1839 he married Augusta G. Thompson. She apparently died due to complications in childbirth on 15 May 1842. He then married Elizabeth Owen on 14 Dec 1844. Alfred is my second great grandfather.

Amos Haskell was b.26 Mar 1787 in New Gloucester, Cumberland County, Maine to Eliphalet and Mary (Woodman) Haskell. He d. 20 Aug 1868 in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, where he was living with his son, Alfred Haskell. He m. Sarah "Sally" Johnson on 20 Jul 1810. Amos is my 3rd great-grandfather.

Amos Haskell was b.26 Mar 1787 to Eliphalet and Mary (Woodman) Haskell in New Gloucester, Cumberland County, Maine (Source: New Gloucester Vital Records). He m. 20 Jul 1810, Sarah "Sally" Johnson (Source: New Gloucester Vital Records), daughter of David and Jenny (Whitney) Johnson. Amos d. 22 Mar 1859 at age 72.

In the 1850 US Federal Census Agricultural Schedule in New Gloucester (viewed on Ancestry.com on 26 May 2010) Amos is noted to have the following:
