Marriage Record - Eliphalet Haskell & Mary Woodman

Yes! I finally found a marriage record for my 4th great grandparents, Eliphalet and Mary (Woodman) Haskell! I've been searching for this record for a long time. My grandmother's notes indicated they were married about 1776 in Kingston, New Hampshire. Kingston is where Mary Woodman was born, so the location was logical. I am in the process of transcribing the town of New Gloucester, Maine vital records and I found the marriage intention for Eliphalet and Mary that states:

The intention of marriage between Eliphalet Haskell of this town and Miss Mary Woodman of Kingstown was entered and published in this town July 1st, 1775

Now, thanks to FamilySearch.org, I have found their marriage date and location - 12 Dec 1775, South Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. There was no image of the original record in the database, but now that I have a location, I can try and track down the original record. I check and recheck the FamilySearch site regularly and have not found this record before. This time I specifically went to the New Hampshire Marriages database and searched for "Eliphalet Haskell", date 1775. The record popped up even though the record lists his first name as Eliphelet.

South Hampton is adjacent to the southeast corner of Kingston. Wikipedia indicates that Kingston was originally part of Hampton, New Hampshire and its royal charter was granted in 1694. South Hampton was chartered in 1742.

I'm pretty excited about finding this. It has been on my to do list for quite awhile.

Mary (Woodman) Haskell Portrait

This portrait of Mary (Woodman) Haskell has been handed down through the generations and is a family treasure. Mary was the wife of Eliphalet Haskell, my fourth great-grandfather. Mary Woodman was b. 30 Mar 1755 to Joshua and Eunice (Sawyer) Woodman in Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. She d. 29 (or 23?) Sep 1839 in New Gloucester, Cumberland County, Maine and is buried in the Lower Cemetery in New Gloucester. Mary's gravestone indicates her death date as 29 Sep 1839. The New Gloucester Vital Records indicate her death date as 23 Sep 1839. Based on my grandmother's notes, this portrait was painted by an "itinerant artist, probably about 1800".Additional source information is available upon request.

Eliphalet Haskell Portrait

Eliphalet Haskell was b. 3 Jun 1753, Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts. He appears in the town records of New Gloucester, Cumberland County, District of Maine circa 1776. He married Mary Woodman on 12 Dec 1775. Eliphalet and Mary had 13 children, all born in New Gloucester, Maine. He died 7 Dec 1833 in New Gloucester, Maine, age 80, and is buried in the Lower Cemetery on Gloucester Hill Road. Portraits of Eliphalet and Mary have been handed down through the family and I currently have them hung at my home. Based on my grandmother's notes, these portraits were painted by an "itinerant artist, probably about 1800". I will share Mary's portrait in a later post.

Amos Haskell was b.26 Mar 1787 in New Gloucester, Cumberland County, Maine to Eliphalet and Mary (Woodman) Haskell. He d. 20 Aug 1868 in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine, where he was living with his son, Alfred Haskell. He m. Sarah "Sally" Johnson on 20 Jul 1810. Amos is my 3rd great-grandfather.

Merrill Haskell Ancestral Chart 16

Ancestral Chart No. 16, continuing Merrill Haskell's direct family line, compiled by Grace Ware (Holbrook) Haskell's. Chart 16 continues from Chart 1 with Eliphalet Haskell back to William Haskell who was born circa 1617 in Charlton-Musgrove, Somerset, England. It appears that William and his older brother Roger, younger brother Mark, and younger sister Joan sailed for American circa 1635. They landed at Salem in Massachusetts and settled in Cape Ann (Beverly and Gloucester).

Amos Haskell

Amos Haskell was b.26 Mar 1787 to Eliphalet and Mary (Woodman) Haskell in New Gloucester, Cumberland County, Maine (Source: New Gloucester Vital Records).  He m. 20 Jul 1810, Sarah "Sally" Johnson (Source: New Gloucester Vital Records), daughter of David and Jenny (Whitney) Johnson. Amos d. 22 Mar 1859 at age 72. 

 In the 1850 US Federal Census Agricultural Schedule in New Gloucester (viewed on Ancestry.com on 26 May 2010) Amos is noted to have the following:

Value of farm implements: 100

Horses: 1
